Local Control: A Wyoming Value That Hits Close to Home
Trusting Our Neighbors to Lead
Sheridan County is blessed with dedicated citizens who lead our local institutions. These are our neighbors—the people we see at the grocery store and the post office. I trust our local boards, and the voters who elect them, to make the decisions that directly affect our community’s daily life.
As I’ve continued visiting with locally elected officials and their administrators, I am consistently impressed by their professionalism and deep commitment to service. Above all, I appreciate their clear understanding of the distinct roles between local government and the state legislature.
The Power of “Home Rule”
Our state’s founding documents are clear on this partnership. According to the Wyoming Constitution, “the powers and authority granted to cities and towns shall be liberally construed for the purpose of giving the largest measure of self-government to cities and towns.”
This principle is often called “home rule,” and it’s a value I hold dear. Similarly, the Wyoming County Commissioners Association describes the relationship between counties and the state as a partnership. Whether it’s our County Sheriff, Clerk, or Treasurer, these officials act as the vital local presence of the state—ensuring that laws are overseen by people who actually live in and understand our community.
Campaign Signs are Hitting the Ground
I’ve been so focused on listening this week that I missed snapping photos of my meetings! However, the landscape is changing in a different way: our first campaign signs are officially up. You can see the very first one at the corner of South Mountain View Drive and Scott Drive.
A huge thank you to the volunteers who are helping place these around Sheridan County. If you would like a sign for your lawn or place of business to show your support, please reach out—I’d be honored to get one to you!
